Satantango, a 1985 novel by Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai, received Best Translated Book Award (BTBA) 2013 for its translation by Hungarian-born British poet and translator George Szirtes on Friday.
The book is published by New-York based New Directions, whose catalogue says “the story of Satantango, spread over a couple of days of endless rain, focuses on the dozen remaining inhabitants of an unnamed isolated hamlet: failures stuck in the middle of nowhere. Schemes, crimes, infidelities, hopes of escape, and above all trust and its constant betrayal are Krasznahorkai’s meat.”
It is one of several books by Krasznahorkai to have been translated by Szirtes and published by New Directions including The Melancholy of Resistance and War and War. The author’s latest novel, Seiobo There Below, is also due to be published by New Directions this July in a translation by Ottilie Mulzet.
