A local translator with the Turkish embassy in the Somali capital Mogadishu was shot dead Thursday by unidentified gunman, Somali police said.

Yusuf Sheikh Hussein Ibrahim was shot several times by a lone gunman who attacked the Turkish embassy staffer at the main junction known as K4.

“The gunman escaped the scene and was pursued by police. We hope to apprehend the culprit and will be brought before a court of law,” Abdiweli Mohamed Arale, head of the embassy security told local Shabelle Radio in Mogadishu.

Turkey reopened its embassy in the Somali capital Mogadishu early in the year following high profile visit to the city by the Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan late last year as devastating famine unfolded in the country.

Turkey has been playing a key role in providing humanitarian and developmental projects to the war ravaged east African country. The move angered he radical group of Al-Shabaab who accused the Turkish government of exporting secularism into the country.

The leader of the al Qaida linked Al-Shabaab movement has recently issued a statement lashing at the growing Turkish role in Somalia and calling for the withdrawal of support for the Somali government.
